Introducing the Moka Pot

This device is not only pleasing to the eye in its design, it also produces a shot that is as close to an espresso that you will get without using an expensive machine (or asking your local barista to prepare it for you). The good news is with the delightfully strong and tasty liquid from your Moka pot, you can prepare your latte, cappuccino or anything else your heart desires.

Using a Moka pot is simple and straightforward, but it might take you a few tries to get to know yours and achieve that perfect caffeine shot. Nothing great is lightly won, right?

There are three components to a Moka pot: the water chamber (bottom part), the coffee basket (where you put your ground beans) and the top chamber (where you collect the good stuff).

Step 1: Pour water into the bottom chamber, right to below the pressure valve (the round little hole on the side of the chamber)

Step 2: Fill the basket with ground beans to the top, spread it evenly and place it in the water chamber

Step 3: Screw the top chamber on tightly and place it on the heat source (stove top, etc.)

Step 4: Keep a close eye on it and listen for the bubbling sound as the heated water is pushed up through the coffee basket and into the top chamber

Step 5: Prepare you cup as per your preference and sit back and enjoy

Tips and Tricks

Type of grind: It is suggested that you use a fine to medium grind. Using too fine a grind may clog the filter and result in a sour taste.

Don’t compress the grinds: Professionals recommend not compressing the ground beans once you have filled the coffee chamber.

Hot water: To avoid burning your coffee, pour boiling water into the water chamber – this will also reduce your preparation time.

Listen to your coffee: Once the boiling water starts pushing through into the top chamber you might hear it bubbling over lightly. As soon as you hear a gurgling or sputtering sound, remove the Moka pot from the heat source.

Milk: If you aspire to that barista-style final product, consider heating up your milk and frothing it in a French press before adding it to your Moka pot coffee shot.
