If you are someone who experiences fast facial hair growth, you’ll know that shaving so regularly can be a chore!

This applies whether you have a carefully tended beard or keep your face clean shaven. It is a necessity as a neat beard is attractive and a messy one not so, and the market for male grooming products has undergone a massive explosion in fresh and innovative products in just a few years. If you wet shave you’re a brave man! It is a good way of getting a clean shave but time consuming and the slightest slip can be costly! This is why electric devices for shaving and trimming beards have become popular. Convenient, efficient and easy to use, they save time and cut down on effort, and are safer in many ways. But the market has moved on a lot in recent years with some clever technology that enables even more efficient trimming.

One product that took our eye is the Philips Norelco OneBlade, a new design of shaver/trimmer from the electronics giant that has opened many eyes. What is the Philips Norelco OneBlade and how does it work? That’s what we’re going to look at here.

Basics of the Philips Norelco OneBlade

Pick up and look at the Philips Norelco OneBlade and it looks and feels like a slightly bulkier version of your favourite wet shaver, the one with the nice grip on the handle and a balanced weighted feel. In fact, the handle seems oversized compared to the cutting blade as it needs to incorporate the battery, but it’s the blade itself that is packed with innovation and has met with glowing praise. You can check out this OneBlade review if you want to go into detail, as we’re more interested in how it does its job.

Look closely at the head of the Philips Norelco OneBlade and what you notice first is the row of bright green teeth that sit at the leading and following edge. These are a clever innovation designed to trap the hairs as you move the blade across the skin. Even cleverer is that the teeth are coated so they move easily over the skin without irritation, which is a welcome touch. The sharp blades behind the teeth do the cutting beautifully and as the blades and teeth are at both the front and back, you can use the Philips Norelco OneBlade in both directions. This is a very unusual feature for an electric shaver and trimmer, and one that will surely have rivals scratching their heads. The crosshatch metal panel in the centre of the head adds better smoothness to the movement, and a fully flexible head is designed to move with the face across the contours and cut closely and quickly.

All in all, the Philips Norelco OneBlade is a cleverly designed beard trimmer and shaver that is not as expensive as you might think, but does it have any drawbacks? There is one, but there is a good reason for it.

Disposable Head

The fact that beards are very much in vogue at the moment means devices like this are under much scrutiny, so what is the problem we speak of? It’s not so much a problem but the upshot of a feature. To keep costs as low as possible Philips designed the head to be easy to make in large quantities and to be disposable. So, after around 4 months use once a day it will need replacing. However, we think the cost saving on the device itself is worth the small outlay for a new head every now and then, so it gets a thumbs up from us!
